Watch dolphins and Whales in their natural habitat. Sip champaign over a stunning goldern sunset. Eat sumptous seafood with world famous white wine from the local vinyards, play golf at many of the local championship courses, or surf some of the best waves you can find anywhere. At Nelson Bay there is somethign for eveyone.

I grew up there as a boy and often think back to the fun I had in the coastal paradise of Nelson Bay. I have since grown up and lilved at a lot of different places, I have also travelled to other countries but I always come back to Nelson Bay and think what an amazing place it is.

Nelson bay - Shoal Bay glorious white beaches

Located in the state of NSW Australia. It's under one hours drive from Newcastle - the closest major city - and 3 hours south from Sydney. It comprises of a very large bay where it was once planned to build Australia's capital city, but a shallow harbour entry excluded it from large ships so they decided to buld Australia's capital in canberra instead. I'm glad they did.

While there has been a steady increase in population it is still small but large enough to have all modern conveniences close at hand. Because there are so many fine beaches on this large sand peninsula you can escape the crowds and have the whole beach to yourself on most days. Just you, the ocean and untouched nature at it's best.

The beaches are so good because the sand is so white, everything is untouched, there is no pollution. The local dolphins can be seen every day whales every other day, both enjoying gods gift of nature. You can go on charted boat trips or simple watch from the beach and see them splashing and jumping out of the water.

The delicious seafood is always fresh and goes best with a local white wine that is sourced from nearby in the Hunter valley. The climate there is especially good for white wine varieties that just happen to go so well with the Nelson Bay seafood.

Diving In Nelson Bay

Diving is also enjoyed in the area, it has the best habour dive in the county. The is a marine park called Hallifax, there you can step in the water and be surrounded by fish and grearted by massive blue gropers, their big blue lips ready to sample some bait you may have brought with you.

Surfing In Nelson Bay

Surfing is fantastic along the white beaches and rocky outcrops of this coast line, you can choose between beautifully shaped A-Frame waves of box beach - one of the best beach breaks in the country - or you could go for more kamikaze action at the many rock breaks. You'll be assured of scoring some perfect tubes but you need to share it with the local pod of dolphines.

If you get really stuck for things to do you can always travel just one hour away to Newcastle - Australias second oldest city - here is a list of 101 things to do in and around Newcastle.

I often think back to those childhood days and imagine how my life would be poorer without them, it makes me appreciate the special place. I'm planning my next trip back already.
